The Discipline of Lines

Mineral Gold Leaf Time

To hold a thangka is to hold time, sealed in mineral and gold leaf.

Each line is the artisan’s silent recitation of the canon;

each wash of colour, the plateau sun breathing upon silk.

The Artisan

Tenzin Lobsang

7th-generation Rebkong-school painter, trained in Tongren, hand-grinding mineral pigments for thirty years.
